AS WE PRAYED FOR PEACE

Who knew in the new year
as we prayed for Peace,
there would be another war,
another country torn,
another city left in ruins.

You can rebuild a city,
but how do you rebuild the shattered lives?
Shell-shocked masses are bewildered and grieving,
no reasons left for staying,
and every reason, now, for leaving.

Some folks are just too old,
too set in their meager ways,
to begin again in another land.
Everything they always worked for
is cast aside, in trifling stages.
Nothing means more than the next bombs dropped
in the war that endlessly rages.

It is not the stronghold or so called control that matters;
it is the many, many precious lives, lost,
and the homefront left in tatters.

Who knew in the new year
as we
Prayed
for PEACE.....

the bewildered child
gently handed the American soldier
a beautiful full bloom rose
passed across
his artillery and Army tank

eyes meeting
the child's hopeful eyes plead
WHY?

the soldier's saddened eyes answer

I DO NOT KNOW...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
holding out hands
for the world to hold
opening hearts to the dream
hoping and praying
that the dream will come true
that there truly is a chance for PEACE
faces flash before me
in ceaseless sequence
the boys next door
marching off to war
EACH NEW SUNRISE
If we are Blessed to see each new sunrise,
we have more than thousands who never will;
or even thousands more,
who grieve for loved one's lost
in this senseless tragedy.
A weary world mourns.
Tears are endlessly flowing;
if only they could wash away the disbelief,
the horror, the pain.
If only they could wash the world - new again.
If we are Blessed to see each new sunrise,
will humanity finally get it right;
to find there is no need for warring nations,
there is no need to fight.
A weary world mourns,
for deeds that have been done,
for people left in numbing shock,
for a Great Nation that is standing as ONE.
If we are Blessed to see each new sunrise,
we have the chance for HOPE,
for the right to pray as each believes,
for the Healing of the World.
A weary world mourns.
Endless weeping, tears that flow;
for orphans, for widowers, for widows,
for dear friends,
left clinging to cherished memories;
for a shocked world,
TO SET ITSELF FREE.
SHHHHH!
This is what is wrong with the world;
everyone is talking at once,
and no one is listening;
to the uplifted voices,
pleading for Peace.
SHHHHH!
Everyone is talking at once,
and no one is listening;
while the plea for Peace waits to be louder;
loud enough to drown out all other sounds,
especially the sounds of war.
"Each New Sunrise" was written when my husband, SPC4 Anthony Joseph Tolfa, was serving with the NY Army National Guard, (Co. A, 152nd Combat Engineers) in New York City after the tragic events of September 11th, 2001. To all who served and still do, we keep you in our prayers.
